About the Program

For basic structural procedures (i.e., TAVR, transseptal/hemodynamic studies, LAAO, MitraClip, ASD/PFO) our fellows graduate at a Proctor level, given the high-volume exposure to all pre/intra/post-procedural aspects, with a special attention to appropriateness, analysis, device selection and outcomes.

Our graduating fellows are confident to tackle advanced and complex cases, including ViV, tricuspid intervention, PVL, fistula, alternate access, and many others, with close collaboration between the adult congenital and pediatric structural programs at UAB.

The interventional/Structural teams are heavily involved in the multidisciplinary effort of advanced mechanical support from the bedside to the lab. That includes basic and complex VV and VA ECMO cannulation strategies, LAVA, Protek, limb perfusion strategy, transapical and others.

The structural service is integral to the multidisciplinary PE team. Fellows graduate with proficiency in PE evaluation, stratification, intervention, and management.

Our structural fellows graduate as advanced TEE operators with training in acquisition, detailed analysis, interpretation, and structural procedure planning.

Our program is involved in multiple interventional/structural trials and our fellows play a key role in identifying the appropriate patients, assessing their eligibility, and coordinating with the research office.

This 1-year of training provides a mentored environment to develop confidence. The structural fellows take STEMI calls, teach interventional fellows, get exposed to complex atherectomy cases, high risk PCI and CTO, with more critical focus on indications and outcome optimization.
