Physicians successfully completing the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program will:
- Master specific clinical objectives for the majority of cardiovascular diseases, including the uncommon and complicated cases.
- Develop proficiency as a primary health care provider, consultant and/or leader of a multidisciplinary health care team.
- Hone communication skills that allow the Fellow to perform as a health care team leader with peers and other healthcare professionals.
- Further the development of proficiency in clinical skills to such a level that Fellows are capable of teaching these skills to trainees at junior levels.
- Further the development of humanistic skills and professionalism to such a level that serves as a model for trainees at a junior level.
- Develop familiarity with areas of active cardiovascular research:
- understand the major research questions in the field
- appreciate the design, performance, potential strengths and shortcomings of a variety of experimental protocols (basic, translational, & clinical)
- Apply the following concepts to patient care:
- outcomes assessment
- quality improvement
- cost-effectiveness
- Understand the structure of the health care system and its regulations, including the
- dynamic nature of such regulations
- forces driving regulatory changes

At the successful completion of the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program, the Fellows will demonstrate proficiencies as:
- primary health care providers in the acute inpatient setting, intensive care unit, ambulatory clinic and emergency department
- consultants to other internists or non-internists in the acute inpatient setting, intensive care unit, ambulatory clinic and emergency department
- leaders of multidisciplinary health care teams, particularly as it relates to chronic disease management within the healthcare institution and in the community

Physicians successfully completing the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program will:
- Attend Department of Medicine and Division of Cardiovascular Disease teaching conferences regularly and participate in the coordination of conference topics and schedules.
- Demonstrate a familiarity with the current literature including evidence-based guidelines knowledge of the literature that underlies these guidelines the ability to change ones practices to implement such guidelines.
- Demonstrate mastery of teaching skills through interaction with trainees in junior levels of training including supervised teaching interactions with
- Junior-level Cardiology Fellows
- Internal Medicine residents
- Medical Students
- Participate in a research project that leads to findings presented (as first author) at a national or regional scientific meeting, or published in peer-reviewed journal.
- Secure research funding through a successful grant application (for Cardiology Fellows remaining in academia).
