The teaching activities of the Division are carried out within the framework of the clinical services and via regularly scheduled teaching conferences. Cardiology Fellows are encouraged to actively participate in all conferences (speaking & leading discussions) several times throughout the year.

Cardiac Catheterization Conference

Cardiology Fellows present interesting cases from the University or VA cardiac catheterization laboratories. Emphasis in this conference is on hemodynamics including assessment of valvular lesions, evaluation of shunts, evaluation of pericardial disease and cardiomyopathies, and intracoronary hemodynamics. All Cardiology Fellows are required to attend the conference. Interaction between the fellows and the diagnostic and interventional cardiology attending physicians is encouraged. Fellows and attending physicians are encouraged to submit interesting cases in these or similar topic areas.
These conferences have a case-based patient management format.

Speakers from other Departments are invited as appropriate (e.g. cardiac radiology, pediatric cardiology, vascular surgery, neurology). The goal is to cover all topics relevant to ABIM Board Certification in Cardiovascular Disease.

This conference has a case-based patient management format.  It is attended by the Cardiology Fellows and echocardiography faculty, and, as opportunity permits, by other Cardiovascular Disease faculty. The Cardiology Fellow assigned to the echocardiography laboratory, under the direction of the echocardiography faculty, provides cases of interest which illustrate important points on echocardiography, supplemented by review of the pertinent literature.

ECG Conference

The arrhythmia faculty directs this weekly conference on ECG interpretation. The conference is attended by Cardiology Fellows, EP subspecialty fellows. Internal Medicine Residents on cardiology rotations or with special interest in cardiology are encouraged to attend as are medical students assigned to cardiology rotations. Topics of advanced interpretation beyond that provided in internal medicine training are highlighted by surface 12-lead ECG’s and intra-cardiac electrograms brought to each conference by Cardiology Fellows, EP subspecialty fellows, and the arrhythmia faculty. At intervals, “ECG tests” with a format similar to the Cardiology Boards are given to provide the residents with additional feedback about their strengths and weaknesses in ECG interpretation.

This conference is given every other week. Cardiology Fellows present pertinent research articles from the current literature preceded by a brief overview of the field to put the article in perspective. Interaction between presenter and audience (fellows and faculty) are strongly encouraged. Discussion emphasizes methodological aspects of these papers (design, analysis, interpretation of the data) and implications for clinical care including the practice of cost-effective care.

This seminar 1) fosters productive scientific interactions and collaborations between investigators across campus who are interested in the role of lipids in various biological processes and pathologies that include oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular disease/atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmunity; and 2) facilitates progress on various lipid methodologies through a setting in which experimental approaches and plans can be discussed and specific goals/needs identified.
