Raymond E. Ideker was born in Oak Park, Illinois in July 1942. He received the BS degree in chemistry from the Arkansas Polytechnic College in 1965 and the MD and PhD degrees in physiology, both from the University of Tennessee in 1972 and 1974 respectively. In 1978, after completing a Pathology residency at Duke University, he joined the Departments of Medicine and Pathology at Duke, where he was Director of the Basic Arrhythmia Laboratory. In 1994, he joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he is the Jeanne V. Marks Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biomedical Engineering and where he directs the Cardiac Rhythm Management Laboratory.
