APPLICANT INFORMATION: Applicants must be PhD candidates, or recent PhD, M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or Pharm.D, recipients who have received their degrees within the past THREE years; clinical training is excluded. Applicants can be a US citizen, permanent resident, or non-citizen nationals (e.g., J-1, F-1, H-1B, etc. visa holders). SCIENCE FOCUS: Applications can be laboratory based or clinical-translational research proposals and must be broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease, in the clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, or public health disciplines.  Additional areas of specific interest include Cardiac Reparative and Regenerative Medicine; Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Prevention; Heart Failure and Transplantation; Heart Rhythm and Arrhythmias; Valvular and Congenital Disease; Vascular and Ischemic Heart Disease, including Stroke.

MENTOR: It is important for the new fellow to receive wise counsel and direction from an established investigator interested in the conduct and progress of the research project during the research training period.  Therefore at the time of submission the Applicant must have identified a Mentor at UAB, who has indicated, in writing, that they are willing to take the fellow in their laboratory.  The Mentor can be from any UAB Department or School, but must have adequate current funding to support the fellow's research project.

BUDGET: The total award amount is $75,000, it is anticipated that no more than $65,000 will be used for Salary support and fringe benefits (NIH salary guidelines are recommended) with the remainder to be used by the fellow to materially support their research activities including travel to conferences for presentation of results. There are no indirect costs associated with this award. Support is planned for one year. Based on suitable progress and availability of funds, the opportunity for a second year of support is possible.

• Deadline for submission is June 30^th, 2013, with an anticipated start date of no later than October 1^st, 2013.
• Cover page including Project Title and Abstract (350 words) and Applicant contact information;
• A statement of the candidate’s background/training, research interests, short- and long-term goals, and level of commitment to an academic career in cardiovascular research (1-2 pages).
• NIH style bio-sketches for Post-Doc and Mentor and other key personnel as appropriate (max 4 pages)
• Budget and justification (max 1 pages);
• Scientific overview of project including hypothesis, aims, significance, innovation, clinical relevance and approach (3 pages)
• Training Plan (1 page)
• Letter of support from Mentor, to include prior mentoring experience and funding available for the project and a statement indicating that the applicant will be able to commit 100% effort to this project with no clinical or teaching commitments (2 page max)
• Reference letters from at least two and no more than three individuals who are familiar with the applicant and their research experience.
• The successful candidate will be expected to attend weekly CCVC research seminars, participate in the annual CCVC symposium as well as other training opportunities
• At the end of the first year of support the fellow will present their work at a CCVC research seminar, and should apply for extramural funding, either to support further post-doctoral training or faculty transition.
