Annual CCVC Symposium

On October 26-27, the UAB Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center (CCVC) along with the UAB Division of Cardiovascular Disease hosted its 10th Annual CCVC Symposium where distinguished experts discussed, “Sex Differences and Gender Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease.” Featheringill Keynote speaker, Emory University Professor of Medicine Dr. Nanette K. Wenger, set the stage discussing underrepresentation of women in all aspects of biologic research creating pervasive gaps in knowledge and care delivery for women, as well as ways to reduce sex-based disparities and achieve equity. Suzanne Oparil Keynote speaker, Director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz discussed the inter-relation between sex and gender in health, disease, and medicine, and the science, policy and health disparities in cardiovascular disease. Other sessions explored molecular mechanisms behind sex-based disparities, the mysteries of ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries, and cv complications in pregnancy. The symposium concluded with the Featheringill Young Investigator finalists giving a presentation of their posters.
