What is REDCap?
REDCap is a secure, web-based application for building and managing online surveys and databases.
REDCap has a great presence on world map as a research data collection tool:
- Developed by Vanderbilt University
- Exclusively designed to support data capture for research studies
- Is part of a worldwide consortium - 1421 active institutional partners in 88 countries
- More than 164,000 projects in production/development, and 224,000 users
- For long term repeated data collecting studies, longitudinal project can be created which provides the ability to define events and data collection forms associated to each event.
Using REDCap's stream-lined process for rapidly developing projects, you may create and design projects using
- Onlin Designer: The online method from your web browser using the Online Designer; and/or
- Data Dictionary: The offline method by constructing a 'data dictionary' template file in Microsoft Excel, which can be later uploaded into REDCap.
Both surveys and databases (or a mixture of the two) can be built using these methods.Data Export for Analytical Purpose
REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
Each project can be managed by project owner with a set of well-defined rules and options. Project owner can add, edit and delete project users and also can define access rights for data export, data entry, reports, and adding other users.
How can DOM IT help?
DOM IT is the largest provider of REDCap services at UAB campus. We provide you all the required information to start a research study using REDCap. Prompt help is available for initial training using REDCap functionalities, advise on REDCap resources, deciding the project type and features best suited to your research study, design help, and to run the study as per your specific requirements.
DOM IT has two REDCap server instances:
https://apps.dom.uab.edu/redcap/ for PHI data research studies
https://dmsrv.dom.uab.edu/ for non-PHI data research projects
You can design your data collection tool fast, and it is flexible to modify it in the middle of the study to enhance the research outputs. We can help you in achieving this in simple steps. If you are planning to start a new research study, REDCap is simple and effective tool for your data collection needs.
A risk analysis has been performed to mitigate the data security concerns for handling sensitive data.
REDCap has already beem approved by IRB for many other PHI data studies. We will work with you, UAB data security team, and UAB IRB team for quick approval to use REDCap as data collection tool. DOM IT is ready to assist in providing customized REDCap document to submit to IRB for PHI research projects. We are committed to provide you the earliest possible solutions to resolve any REDCap issue.
We currently host ~ 180 PHI and Non-PHI research studies/Surveys for different UAB departments and divisions including Psychiatry, Nephrology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Infectious disease, and many others.
