re DOPM Passwords....
How to choose your first; how to reset if expired; and how to change it

If you received an email indicating your DOPM password will be expiring soon, please go straight to the 3rd tab below, entitled "(3)Change password Before it Expires".

  1. If you are new and have just received your "starter password" and "Server Account form", click the 1st tab below to pick your first password.
  2. DOPM passwords expire approx every 4 months.  If yours has expired, click the 2nd tab below.
  3. If your DOPM password has not yet expired, but you want to change it for whatever reason (including because it's going to expire soon), click the 3rd tab below.
NOTE: Tab 1 and Tab 2 refer to ts.dopm.uab.edu
That is an older remote computer that is now used only rarely -- mainly for changing expired passwords, and sometimes for selecting your first DOPM password.
**However it is no longer online, so these instructions do not work, and they are in the process of being updated (June 27, 2017)**
If needed, call for assistance: 205-934-7662

You shouldn't use it for anything else -- unless there are very extenuating circumstances.
To remote into it (or into ts4.dopm.uab.edu) you will either need to be on UAB campus or you will need VPN software connected.

(1)I'm new

I'm new and need to pick my first password

If you are at Medical Towers and on a wired connection (not WiFi), it's very easy:
Simply sign into a computer using your DOPM username and starter password provided on your "Server Account form" and proceed as instructed on the screen.

Otherwise....
On the UAB campus (or with VPN software connected)
  1. Click Start or the Globe icon on your lower left
  2. Click All Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Click Remote Desktop Connection
NOTE:  If you are using a Mac, the above steps are Finder >> Applications >> Remote Connection instead.
  5. Connect to this computer:  ts.dopm.uab.edu (**see Note above; this no longer works**)
  6. Click OK … OK
  7. Type in your DOPM Username with this extra bit at the beginning or the end:
    dopm-d1a\your-DOPM-username   ~or~  your-DOPM-username@dopm-d1a
    ...for example dopm-d1a\jsmith  ~or~
    jsmith@dopm-d1a
  8. Type in your DOPM password (aka the standard starter password)
(both of the above are provided on the "Server Account Form" -- that's emailed to either the new person or their supervisor)
  9. Click OK …. OK
  10. Type what you want your next DOPM password to be in both fields (New Password field and Confirm New Password field)
  11. Click OK….OK…OK
Note: You will probably see something that looks like a warning that includes this phrasing "Logon Message... To log on to this remote computer, you must be granted the Allow log on through Terminal Services..."  That is normal.  Just click [OK] and you are now done with ts.dopm.uab.edu

  5. Connect to this computer:  ts.dopm.uab.edu (**see Note above; this no longer works**)
  6. Click OK … OK
  7. Type in your DOPM Username with this extra bit at the beginning or the end:
    dopm-d1a\your-DOPM-username  ~or~   your-DOPM-username@dopm-d1a
    ...for example dopm-d1a\jsmith  ~or~

If you don’t remember the password... ...you’ll need to contact DOPM help at (205)934-7662 or dopmHelp@uabmc.edu and ask us to reset it.

SPECIAL Exception:
If you have an encrypted laptop ...  that uses WiFi (??)  ... is on network (??)
You have several options:
The easiest is: Bring it to us in MT-403 for assistance in changing your password.
~or~
If you want to do it yourself... Keep reading...

(Rich still needs to review this; it may not be completely correct)

Normally, the way an encrypted laptop works is:
Once we at dopmHelp have "added you to the encryption", your DOPM password will get you through 2 "locks" (using the same password) via a technique called "Single Sign on".  The two locks are:
  • (a)the gray screen (the encryption screen) which protects the stuff in the computer (c:drive and desktop) by scrambling it.
  • (b)connecting to the DOPM network, so you can access the network (i.e., stuff on network drives, which are H:Drive thru Z:drive)
So when you change you have to change the password in 2 spots.
  1. For what I describe as (b) above, change it the normal way (Ctrl+Alt+Delete)
  2. Then, for what I describe as (a) above, you have to force that to change by doing these steps:
    1. PGP
    2. PGP Desktop
    3. Tools
    4. Synchronize All Keys
    5. Restart
