Virtual Private Network

What it is

VPN Software

What it is:

VPN stands for “Virtual Private Network.”

It uses a VPN Tunnel to transmit data instead of the Internet.
This is better for security reasons.
Here is a simplified drawing of it to help explain

When it’s required

When it’s required:

If you remote into any DOPM computer from OFF campus, the computer you use for that will need to have VPN software on it.

(If you are ON campus, you do NOT need it.)

How to get it (install it, run it)

How to get it (install it, run it)

The way to get that VPN software (if you don’t already have it) is:

If it’s a computer owned by DOPM…
…please email DOPM’s HelpDesk at dopmHelp@uabmc.edu and ask them to install it.

If it’s NOT a computer owned by DOPM…
…please get the software from UAB and install it yourself.

The big-picture is:
1.    First, you need to INSTALL it one time.
2.    Then you need to RUN it one time.

Here are details for those 2 steps:
1. To Install it… Go to http://www.uab.edu/vpn/  -- on that page you will see several options:

  • For a Windows computer, click the AnyConnect Windows VPN Software for 32 and 64 bit systems option
  • For a Mac computer, click the AnyConnect Mac OSX VPN software option
You will be asked for your Blazer ID and Blazer password so provide that.
Note: If you have a XIAS account instead of a Blazer ID use that instead (in which case, username=your email address)

And choose to [Run] it
Click [Next]
Put a checkmark to indicate that you Accept the Terms of Service.
Click [Next] [Next] [Install]
2. To Run it… Do these 3 steps in the order shown here (do 1, then 2, then 3).

Note: If you have a XIAS account instead of a Blazer ID use that instead (in which case, username=your email address)

How to use it each time & tips

How to use it each time and tips

Each time (before connecting to a DOPM remote server):

  • Click [Start] or the Microsoft Globe icon on lower left
  • Choose VPN (Cisco AnyConnect...)
  • Click “Connect”

Tips:

Only use the VPN when you are using a remote server because

  • Anytime the VPN is on, whatever you do on your computer runs through it.
  • It will make the computer slower for other stuff.
