The UAB DEM has a two-year research fellowship for training young investigators. The program is partly supported by the Clinical Research Skills Development Core of the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium.

The goal of the research fellowship is to prepare young investigators for successful NIH-funded investigative careers. We believe that new investigator training requires immersion in a comprehensive experience encompassing: 1) formal didactic research training, with emphasis on quantitative and methodological approaches, 2) hands-on research experience, 3) close mentorship and career development, and 4) frequent interaction with scientific peers and community. We conceptualize the fellowship as a building block for 5-10 years of continued scientific growth.

We believe that trainees will derive maximal benefit when drawing upon lessons and mentorship from multiple disciplines. Research fellows have full access to the superb UAB mentoring resources, which include experts in cardiac arrest, trauma, shock, sepsis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, biostatistics, epidemiology, and health services research, among others. Interested fellows may participate in mouse, rat, and swine resuscitation labs. Others may choose to participate in ongoing prehospital, epidemiologic, or health services research studies. All fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing DEM studies.

Research fellows participate in the NIH K30 Clinical Research Training Program and work toward a Master of Science in Public Health (M.S.P.H.) degree in Clinical Research offered by the UAB School of Public Health.
