Welcome from the Chair
Welcome to the website of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology. We are excited to have you look at the outstanding achievements of a group of clinicians and vision scientists in creating a rich environment for patient care, research, and educational activities.
The Department of Ophthalmology prides itself in excellence in all its core missions. We provide both primary and consultative care to patients referred from throughout the southeast region of the United States. Every subspecialty is represented within our faculty, providing "one stop shopping" for our patients. In addition, with the assistance of our resident physicians, comprehensive eye care is provided at the Lions Eye Clinic in the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, the Veterans Administration Hospital and Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.
We have a robust research program including both basic and clinical activities. As part of a top-tier academic medical center, our eye research combined with patient care and education allows us to move new knowledge quickly from bench to bedside to community. Our research includes investigations into the underlying mechanisms of eye disease along with technologies to provide cutting edge diagnostic techniques and treatments to our patients. We are focused on understanding many major eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis. The approaches used by our faculty encompass a wide range of disciplines, including replacement cell therapy, cell culture, quantitative histopathology, animal models, optical engineering and imaging, visual function testing, low vision rehabilitation, and mental health services for those dealing with vision loss.
The department is the only ophthalmology residency program for the state of Alabama. This educational experience provides a great balance between clinical training and didactic lectures. Five residents are accepted each year, and a good number pursue fellowship programs throughout the country.
The department is proud to be located in the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital, a unique facility providing onsite operating rooms and a 24-hour eye emergency room. Located in the heart of a major biomedical research university such as UAB, provides a rich milieu for a top notch academic department.
