Sight is a precious gift. It allows us to see the faces of our family, friends, and loved ones. It allows us to see the beauty and colors of the earth around us- the flowers, trees, and mountains. It allows us to connect with our world.

We have a dream...that one day there will be no blinding diseases or irreversible loss of sight. That everyone will share in the gift of sight free from the fear of ever losing it.

Charitable Gift Opportunities

Current Giving

3An outright gift enables us to immediately address our most pressing needs and gives you the opportunity to see the results and benefits during your lifetime. Outright gifts give you the benefit of an income tax deduction, capital gains tax avoidance, and/or Federal estate tax reduction. Many donors write a check for their gifts, but there might be a more effective way for you to give through appreciated securities or property you own.

Gifts of Cash
Many donors write checks payable to UAB Department of Ophthalmology.
The gift is tax deductible up to 50% of the donor's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).
Gifts in excess of the 50% limit may be carried over the next five years to realize the full tax deduction.

Appreciated Securities
Can be used to make an outright gift or to fund a life income gift.
Provides an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of securities held for more than one year with a 30% limit of the donor's AGI.
  •  Again, gifts in excess of the 30% limit may be carried over the next three years to realize the full tax deduction.

Closely Held Stock
Gifts of this type may provide a charitable tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock. If you own stock in a closely held corporation, contact the Department of Ophthalmology for steps required to make this type of gift.
There are a number of ways to structure a gift of this type so that the benefits best meet your needs.

Matching Gifts
Some companies offer matching gift programs that allow the donor to secure 50% - 100% more funds for the UAB Department of Ophthalmology. Check with your employer to see if there is matching money available.

Gifts through United Way
If you work in a company that runs a United Way campaign and allows outside designations, you can direct all or a part of your work place gift to the UAB Department of Ophthalmology simply by indicating our name on the designations part of the pledge form.
We are a 501(c) 3 charitable organization serving the eye health care needs of the state of Alabama.

Personal Property and Real Estate
A gift of real estate or personal property can create a sizeable tax savings for the donor by eliminating the capital gains. The donor is also entitled to a tax deduction equal to the appreciated value of the property.
Many kinds of property can be used to make this type of gift, including a vacation home, commercial building, subdivision, or undeveloped land. You may even give your residence now and still reside there for life.
Gifts of tangible property like artwork or valuable collections are also welcome and may provide significant tax benefits. If you are considering the gift of a car, know that new regulations allow you to deduct only the fair market value of your particular car. Contact the Development Office in the Department of Ophthalmology for additional information about automobile gifts.

Planned Giving or Deferred Giving

4Planned gifts allow you to benefit the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and your loved ones as well. They include a variety of ways to give-each with a special tax benefit to the donor. A planned gift allows you to leave a special legacy and impact generations to come with your philanthropy.

Charitable Lead Trust
Enables donor to fund an endowed chair, scholarship, faculty position, building renovation or research project while transferring sizeable assets to heirs with significant tax benefits
UAB Department of Ophthalmology receives annual payments (either fixed or variable) for a predetermined amount of time after which the remaining assets go to the beneficiary
Donor receives charitable tax deduction equal to the present value of payments to UAB based on the time value of money
Donor is taxed on net income and capital gain produced within the Trust but can deduct payments made to UAB
  $1,000,000 minimum is recommended

Life Insurance
A paid up policy may be used for an outright gift.
Making UAB the owner of a new policy provides an income tax deduction for premium payments.

Retirement Plan Assets
With revised policies enacted by the Pension Protection Act of 2006, you can now make gifts of retirement assets without negative tax consequences. Rollover gifts are not taxed, neither are they eligible for a charitable tax deduction.
There are a number of ways to structure a gift of this type so that the benefits best meet your needs. Contact the Development Office in the Department of Ophthalmology for additional information.

Will Bequests
Bequests provide an investment in the future of the Department of Ophthalmology. Your bequest will fund programs, scholarships, and faculty chairs in years to come. See below for sample will language:

"I give to the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama for an on behalf of The University of Alabama at Birmingham $_______. * I request that it be used for ________ in UAB's Department of Ophthalmology."

* The bequest can also be funded through a designation of a percentage of your estate or through bequests of real estate, securities, or other assets.

The development office can assist you in assuring that your bequest language clearly states your future intentions.

Planned Gifts that Provide You with an Income

5Many donors who wish to make a substantial planned gift to the UAB Department of Ophthalmology may also feel that they can't afford to give up the annual income provided by the asset to be donated. The perfect answer to this situation is to use a method of giving that also produces a life income to the donor.

Charitable Gift Annuity
Provides supplemental income payments for lifetime (and the lifetime of your spouse)
Offers charitable tax deduction at the time of the gift and favorable tax treatment of income in every year thereafter
Serves as both an investment and a charitable gift
Supports the Department of Ophthalmology for generations to come
$10,000 minimum contribution; must be 60 or older

Charitable Remainder Trust
Enables donor to make a substantial gift to the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and receive a life income as well as current tax deduction
Donor may receive a fixed dollar amount payment (Annuity Trust) or payments based on a fixed percentage of the January 1 market value (Unitrust)
Donor receives immediate charitable tax deduction equal to the present value of the gift as determined by life expectancy tables, and trust assets avoid inheritance tax
Can be funded with cash, securities, or real estate (recommended minimum funding is $50,000)
No age limit, but typically benefits an individual nearing retirement
