The UAB NF Program is internationally recognized for its contributions to outstanding clinical care, research, and education related to all forms of neurofibromatosis (NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis).
Genetic testing and counseling
Clinical management & surveillance
Treatment of complications
Treatment of plexiform neurofibromas
New mouse models and cell culture for drug testing
Whole genome analysis of neurofibromas
Stem cell studies of NF tumors
The UAB NF Program has taken the lead nationally and internationally in many programs aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge about NF, particularly for patients, their families, and health providers. Our program director, Dr. Bruce Korf, is co-author of the book Neurofibromatosis: A Handbook for Patients, Families, and Healthcare Professionals.
Dr. Korf also created a Web-based educational site, www.understandingnf1.org, that provides resources including a video counseling session, interviews with patients and family members, and a photo glossary for patients and families throughout the world. The UAB NF Program conducts annual NF Awareness Symposia to provide the latest information to patients and family members about the condition.
Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph.D.
The UAB NF Program is directed by Dr. Bruce Korf, a medical geneticist and neurologist and a physician-scientist internationally renowned for his work on NF. He is the chair of the UAB Department of Genetics and director of the UAB Heflin Center for Genomic Sciences.
Dr. Korf has more than 25 years of experience in patient care, research, and education in neurofibromatosis and he serves as principal investigator of the Department of Defense-funded NF Consortium. He also is chair of the national Medical Advisory Committee of the Children's Tumor Foundation.
The more expansive the research effort, the greater the probability of making the next breakthrough.
What we need to accomplish:
To accelerate our research efforts in NF by recruitment of additional outstanding scientists and physicians, post-doctoral fellows, and pre-doctoral scholars
To expand our research acceleration/drug discovery funds
Gifts from visionary philanthropic partners will remain vital to our efforts as we move forward and increase our status as a leader in laboratory research and the treatment of patients with NF.
Under Dr. Bruce Korf's leadership, we have an ambitious plan to aggressively recruit leading physicians and scientists to UAB, allow current researchers at UAB to accelerate their research efforts, and provide vital funding to initiate innovative research projects studying NF.
In the near future we plan to expand the number of physicians, scientists, and research projects aimed at new discoveries in NF. The future is bright, and UAB looks forward to playing a leading role in finding new treatments and a cure for NF.
