Uma Borate is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology with a special interest in Hematological Malignancies especially Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Myelodysplastic syndrome. She did her medical school training at the B.J. Medical College in Pune, India. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, where she was recognized as the Best Categorical Intern as well as the Best Graduating Resident in her class. This was followed by a Chief Residency at her training program where she also served as the Housestaff President and the Editor of the 'WhiteCoat' residency newsletter. She completed her fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham where she presented her research on Lymphomas at several national and international oncology conferences.
In 2011, Dr. Borate won a prestigious Young Investigator Award to fund her research on Acute Myeloid Leukemia from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Borate will be focus on translational research in Leukemias and Lymphomas and will be providing state of the art medical care to cancer patients at the Kirklin Clinic at UAB three days a week.
In 2011, Dr. Borate recieved a Young Investigator Award from the ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation. The award is for her research on a new blood test that measures telomeres in leukemia patients. Her studies are designed to help distinguish patients likely to relapse from those likely to stay in remission.
