Dr. Grant joined the faculty of UAB in July 2011 as an Associate Professor of Medicine within the Division of Hematology/Oncology and as Scientist within the Experimental Therapeutics Program of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center where his research focus is on improving the treatment of lung cancer. He received his medical degree (M.B., B.Ch.) from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, was subsequently awarded an M.D. degree ad eundem from the State University of New York and obtained a J.D. degree from Fordham University School of Law in New York.
Dr. Grant undertook postgraduate training in internal medicine in South Africa and in the United Kingdom and then completed an internal medical residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Thereafter, he completed a hematology/oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He then joined the faculty within the Thoracic Oncology Service of Memorial Sloan-Kettering and the faculty of the Weill Cornell Medical College. While there, he undertook both clinical and laboratory research exploring innovative therapies for the treatment of both small cell and non-small cell lung cancer, expanding his laboratory research into a large multinational vaccine trial for the treatment of small cell lung cancer.
He also is a registered patent attorney and, in that capacity, has been involved in the development of cancer treatments, as the general counsel of a pharmaceutical company developing new cancer therapeutics, as a litigator seeking to make generic drugs more readily available to patients and in advising companies and research institutions in the licensing and development of innovative therapies.
Dr. Grant is board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology and also holds specialist qualifications in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology in South Africa.
