Attendance Guidelines for Clinical Rotations

The SOM follows the existing RRC guidelines for duty hours. Based on the RRC policy, student should expect to receive 1 day off per week (i.e. average 4 days off in a one month period). Please keep in mind weekends are considered work days in this policy.

Guidelines for an acceptable number of additional student absence days beyond the RRC policy:

  1. Clerkships/Selectives – Students missing more than 2 days beyond the provided 4 days in a 4-week period is considered unacceptable and should require remediation. Remediation should, if possible, occur in the same 4-week period where students would work on days where they would normally be given the day off. Example – In a 4-week clerkship where students are expected to be present Monday thru Saturday and off on Sunday, a student who missed more than 2 required days would be required to make up for this missed time by participating in Sunday rounds. Students missing 1 or 2 required days would not necessarily be required to remediate.
  2. Acting internships – All acting internships are 4 weeks. Students missing more than 2 days beyond the provided 4 days in a 4-week period is considered unacceptable and should require remediation. Remediation should, if possible, occur in the same 4-week period where students would work on days where they would normally be given the day off.
  3. Clinical electives – The majority of clinical electives do not require to students to participate in weekend activities (i.e. students typically have 8 days off in a 4-week elective and 4 days off in a 2-week elective). Students missing more than 2 days beyond the provided 8 days in a 4-week period or missing more than 1 day in a 2-week period is considered unacceptable and should require remediation. Remediation should, if possible, occur in the same 4-week period where students would work on days where they would normally be given the day off.
