Surgery Clerkship-Birmingham

Surgery Clerkship Overview:
  • 8 Week Rotation (in any order):
    • 6 Weeks General Surgery (Two 3-week blocks)
      • Options for general surgery blocks (must choose 2):  pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, hepatobiliary, colorectal, endocrine, GI laparoscopic, transplant, vascular, trauma/burns, VA general
    • 3 Weeks General
    • 2 Weeks Sub-Specialty
      • Options:  ENT, plastics, urology, orthopedics, thoracic, neurosurgery

General Hours:

  • Rounds:  Vary by rotation
  • OR cases:  Begin 7am
  • Clinics:  Vary by rotation
  • Lectures:  Tues/Thurs 6:30-8am
  • Director's Conference:  Tuesdays at 4:30pm
  • Grand Rounds:  Thursdays at 5pm
  • Preceptor Meetings:  Weekly, times vary

Goals of Clerkship:

  • Become familiar with pre-op considerations
  • Become familiar with post-op complications
  • Understand indications and recommendations for particular management strategies
  • Understand important anatomic relationships
  • Become familiar with managing unstable patients
  • Learn to evaluate for surgical emergencies

Main Responsibilities:
  • Assist your team in any way possible!
  • Make "the list" each morning
  • Assist with writing daily progress notes
  • Actively participate in daily rounds
  • Participate in procedures and surgeries
  • Assist seeing patients and writing notes in clinic
  • Attend all lectures and conferences

Speal Note:  Call Donna Mannig, surgery coordinator, 2 to 6 weeks prior to beginning your surgery rotation
to request the specific surgical rotations you would like to complete; also discuss any requests for particular weekends you would not like to have trauma call.
