At a population of over 1 million, Birmingham has all of the amenities of big city, while still maintaining the warmth and hospitality of a Southern town. Many medical graduates from far reaches of the country have arrived in Birmingham for postgraduate training and have permanently relocated to Birmingham following their residency training because they have found what the people of Birmingham already know: Birmingham is a great place to live!

Housing

Whether it is a condo downtown within walking distance to UAB or home in one of many beautiful neighborhoods, Birmingham has numerous affordable housing options all a short drive away from UAB.

Dining

Birmingham chefs Frank Stitt, Chris Hastings and Chris Dupont have helped put Birmingham on the culinary map. From fine dining to local dives, Birmingham has a plethora of restaurants to choose from.

Shopping

From big name retailers to small boutiques to everything in between, Birmingham has an abundance of shopping opportunities.

Outdoors

With Oak Mountain State Park in our backyard and Alabama’s Sipsey Wilderness Area nearby, those who enjoy the outdoors won’t be disappointed in Birmingham. It is only a short drive to great mountain biking, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and horseback riding. For the more adventurous amongst us, it is only a few hours to the Great Smokey Mountains.

Nightlife

Whether you want to get a tasty beverage after work or to dance the night away, there is no shortage of nightlife in Birmingham. Favorites of the UAB residents are establishments in the 5 Points and Lakeview areas.

Traveling to Fun

The beaches of Alabama’s gulf coast and the Florida coastline and hiking and camping in the Great Smoky Mountains are each only 4 hours away.

The fun of Atlanta is only 2 hours.

Birmingham’s airport is big enough to offer flights to just about anywhere, but small enough to have short lines and friendly service. You’re just a flight away from wherever you want to visit!
