Steven was born in Birmingham, AL. He's seen both sides of the Alabama college football rivalry, attending Auburn University for one year followed by University of Alabama for the remainder of undergrad. He returned home for medical school at UAB and is thrilled to continue his residency training in Birmingham. He intends to pursue an academic career in [specialty to-be-decided] but is leaning towards general internal medicine. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring the newest restaurants and breweries in town with his wife and friends.

Leslie AvantLeslie Avant

Leslie is originally from Arab, Alabama and graduated with both a B.S. and Master’s degree in Accounting from Auburn University. After practicing as a CPA for seven years, Leslie decided to change careers and pursue her dream of becoming a physician. As a lifelong resident of Alabama, Leslie was thrilled to attend medical school at UAB and is excited to have the opportunity to stay in Birmingham for residency as she and her husband Will are proud to call Birmingham home! When she is not in the hospital, Leslie loves spending time with her husband and two children, and occasionally, jogging.

Thomas BakerThomas Baker

Medical School: University of South Alabama
Thomas was born and raised in Mobile, and then traveled to New Orleans for undergraduate at Tulane University. After college, he moved back home for medical school at the University of South Alabama. Though he will miss the Gulf Coast, he is very excited to move to Birmingham for residency and explore this growing, booming city. He is staying open-minded about career possibilities after residency, but he is strongly considering a fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care. In his spare time, he enjoys camping and hiking, golfing, playing board and video games with friends, and reading a good sci-fi novel.

Anirudh BhargavaAnirudh Bhargava

Anirudh was born in New Delhi, India and spent much of his childhood in Alexandria, Louisiana. After completing his undergraduate years at Emory University, Anirudh returned to Louisiana for medical school. He credits his interest in medicine to his father, a pediatrician, who he considers to be his ultimate role model and chose Internal Medicine at UAB for its wonderful people and excellence in patient care. After residency, he is interested in pursuing a career in Cardiology but is otherwise open-minded. Outside of the hospital, Anirudh is an avid follower of the Indian cricket team, enjoys quality time with family and friends, and plans on following up a recent trip to Yosemite with another national park.

Sean CarterSean Carter

Medical School: Central Michigan University College of Medicine
Sean was born and raised in Michigan. He had his first taste of the South when he attended Bob Jones University in South Carolina, where he met his future wife. After completing undergraduate, he returned to Michigan for medical school at Central Michigan. During interviews, he was impressed with the warm, collegial environment at UAB, and he is looking forward to settling into his new (warmer) home in Birmingham. He is interested in becoming involved in medical education and training, whether it be in general medicine or a specialty. He enjoys spending time outdoors, running, playing sporting clays, and fishing (if you know of any good spots, let him know!).

Anjali DasAnjali Das

Anjali grew up in Portland, Oregon and completed college and her medical school training in New Jersey. She came to Birmingham for an externship last year to be near her younger sister, an alum of the University, and fell in love with the program (and the South!). She is excited to dive into all the subspecialties internal medicine has to offer, though is leaning towards cardiology or pulmonary-critical care. Outside of medicine, you can find her exploring the outdoors on a hike or partaking in delicious ethnic cuisines!

Vick DiCarloVick DiCarlo, II

Vick was born in New Orleans, LA but grew up here in Birmingham where he attended Homewood High School.  He then achieved his undergraduate degree from Auburn University followed by his medical degree at LSU-New Orleans.  Vick wishes to pursue a career in Gastroenterology while also keeping an open mind about other subspecialties in the coming years. While New Orleans was so much fun, Vick and his wife are happy to return to Birmingham where they enjoys spending time with family and friends on hiking trails, at breweries and trying new food spots in Birmingham!

Jacob is from central Mississippi. He went to college at Ole Miss where he met his wife, Chloe. He loves to teach, is interested in cardiology, and one day plans on working at an academic hospital. He recently moved to Birmingham and looks forward to exploring its hiking trails and everything else the city has to offer. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family, cooking, crafting his own coffee, and listening to audiobooks.

Richard GodbyRichard Godby

Rich was raised on a small farm just outside Cincinnati, where he grew up on Graeter’s Ice Cream and Skyline Chili. He was homeschooled until high school, where he was crowned Homecoming King – needless to say, he can be quite chatty – and then went on to become a first-generation college graduate. He is thrilled to soak up all the southern hospitality and charm of Birmingham while having the privilege to train at UAB. After residency, he plans to complete a fellowship and remain active in research as well as medical education. Outside the hospital, Rich enjoys attending concerts, trying new restaurants, seeing new movies, and trying to prove to his girlfriend that he’s responsible enough for a puppy!

Jason GraffagninoJason Graffagnino

Growing up in south Louisiana, Jason was obviously going to become a tiger fan and attend LSU to receive his bachelor’s degree. After college, he took 2 years off to work and travel before starting medical school in New Orleans. Jason was excited to match into UAB’s internal medicine program due to its collegial residents and its reputation for excellence. Currently, he is undecided on what career path he will choose but is considering pulmonary/critical care and cardiology. As a longtime foodie, Jason enjoys foolishly attempting food challenges, conquering all-you-can-eat buffets, and cooking prohibitively spicy food. In his free time in Birmingham, he hopes to explore its many hiking trails, microbreweries, and restaurants.

Cole was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah where he met his beautiful wife Jill. He attended medical school at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. During this time, he added to the family his amazing daughter (Quinn) and dog (Cota). He will be pursuing a residency in Ophthalmology at UAB but first is excited to learn more about Internal Medicine at UAB. If not at the hospital, you can find him and his family fly fishing, camping and traveling.

Patrick was born and raised in Hattiesburg, MS and attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS where he became an avid Ole Miss rebel fan. Patrick ventured to Jackson, MS for medical school and is excited to continue his training at UAB. He and his wife, Mary Claire, love Birmingham so far and are eager to explore all that it has to offer. In his free time, you can find him enjoying the great outdoors, spending time with family and friends, or indulging in some great Birmingham barbecue. 

Matthew HollieMatthew Hollie

Matthew was born in Denver, CO but only lived there for three months before moving to Phoenix while his Dad was in the Air Force. Three years later, he and his family moved to the Chattanooga area where he grew up and went to college. He then moved to Athens, GA to start medical school. He spent his first two years of medical school in Athens before transferring to the Southeast clinical campus for his third and fourth year after marrying his wife who was living and working in Savannah Ga. He was drawn to Birmingham based on a recommendation from one of his clinical instructors, its stellar reputation in the world of internal medicine, and because of its proximity his hometown of Chattanooga where both his family and his wife's family live. He loves sports and working out but also has a geeky side. A big inspiration that led to him becoming a physician was his father who is also a physician

Seema was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. She attended the University of Alabama, where she studied Biology and Spanish. After graduation, she was thrilled to receive a Fulbright scholarship that allowed her to live and teach in Spain for a year, which was the best experience of her life. She then headed back home to Shreveport for medical school. She is still deciding what she wants to do after residency, but plans to stay in the academic world as she loves teaching and learning. In her free time, she enjoys reading anything and everything, pursuing her passion for photography, and traveling to unique places all over the world. She is excited to explore Birmingham and get to know her new home!

Carissa was born in Birmingham and lived here until age 14. After spending 12 years away, she is thrilled to be moving back to her hometown. Her career interests at this point are open to almost any field in medicine. She enjoys connecting with patients and exploring the complexities of medicine. On days off, she loves to cook, clean, and waterski.

Nelson MandrellNelson Mandrell

Following completion of his undergraduate degree in psychology, Nelson lived and worked in North Carolina and Colorado before completing his Master of Science in Sustainability from Arizona State University. As a graduate student, he focused on urban land activation projects and curricula development for local high schools as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. During medical school he was active in social medicine projects as clinic manager for the Ozanam Inn Student-Run Free Health Clinic and in the development of standardized patient scenarios for competency evaluation in the medical school admissions interview. Nelson is thrilled to begin his post-graduate training with the residents and faculty of UAB’s Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program. His current professional interests are in medical education and he plans to participate in the Clinician Educator Track over the coming year.

Alexandra MartirossianAlexandra Martirossian

Alexandra was born and raised in Texas, and growing up she experienced the joys of caring for horses and other animals on her family’s land. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology from UT Austin (Hook’em Horns!) and then moved to Galveston for medical school where she studied AND played on the beach. She is ecstatic about completing her Internal Medicine residency at UAB, and she later plans on pursuing a fellowship in Endocrinology. Outside of medicine, her absolute favorite hobby is cooking, and she also enjoys running, reading, travelling, and exploring local eateries.

Cody MillimanCody Milliman

Hometown: Hope Hull, AL/ Pottsville, PA

Medical School: LSUHSC-New Orleans
Cody grew up in Hope Hull, AL where he lived on a ranch before moving to Pottsville, PA, the home of Yuengling Brewery, when he was 12. He made his way back down south to LSU where he studied Biochemistry and Microbiology and met his wife, Alanna, through campus ministry and football. He then headed to the Big Easy for medical school before returning home to Alabama for residency. Through his travels, he learned that Cajun cooking can't be beat, you can always count on hospitality and sweet tea in Bama, and the snow and cold are miserable up north. He has an open mind about his career path, mainly because he’s liked everything he’s tried, but Hematology and Oncology was his first passion. In his free time, Cody is a sports fanatic, playing, coaching, and watching. He is a diehard LSU fan and will fight you when it comes to defending and cheering on his Tigers.

Nabiel Mir

Nabiel was born in Abu Dhabi where he completed high school and travelled to French Canada to pursue the study of Human Physiology at McGill. He then continued his international experience by travelling to Australia to pursue a MD by the beach in Brisbane. Besides acquiring a solid tan, he discovered his love for patient care and scholarly activity. His love for immunology drove him to pursue his IM residency at UAB-Birmingham where he plans on dabbling in Academic Medicine and exploring new gastronomic experiences.

Grant MoodyGrant Moody

Medical School: Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University
Grant was born in Nashville, Tennessee but moved to Georgia when he was 7. He attended the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and went on to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He was drawn to UAB by the great culture and people he met on his interview day, as well as the allure of delicious beer and food. He couples matched into UAB with a fellow IM intern and is excited to experience all that Birmingham has to offer with her! Grant is considering a career in cardiology in the future. During his free time, he enjoys swimming, playing video games, and reading sci-fi.

Rachel was born in east Tennessee and attended the University of Tennessee for college. She travelled to Gainesville, Florida to complete medical school at the University of Florida. She is interested in critical care or oncology as a specialty but is keeping an open mind. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, spending time with family and friends, and playing with her dog, Charlie.

Ben grew up in Huntsville, AL and is a diehard Alabama sports fan. Naturally, he attended the University of Alabama for undergrad (Roll Tide) and then headed south for medical school, at the University of South Alabama. While in medical school, Ben married his high school sweetheart, who graduated from UAB’s PT school, and they are both very excited to spend the next chapter of their life in Birmingham. Ben was drawn to UAB because of the atmosphere surrounding the program and for the excellent clinical training. He is interested in Gastroenterology but is keeping an open mind about other specialties. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, watching sports, and spending time with his family and friends.

Luis PalominoLuis Palomino

Luis began his career in nursing, and he considers it a very special moment in that it transformed him as a person and made him realize his interest in internal medicine. He still enjoys being at the bedside, especially explaining to patients and families about their medical care in the hospital. He is very happy to have matched at UAB. He has lived in mega cities his whole life, and he wanted to explore what smaller and quieter cities have to offer. So far, Birmingham has been a great city with its own southern style of living and beautiful scenery. He enjoys eating at new restaurants, especially BBQ, hiking at Red Mountain, and checking all the new breweries in town. He also enjoys salsa dancing at night. On quieter days, he likes reading non-fiction and enjoys watching films. He is currently interested in hospital medicine and GI, but open to other specialties that UAB has to offer.

A proud Texas native, Maritza attended UT Dallas to study Chemistry and Neuroscience and then headed down I-35 to attend medical school at UT Health San Antonio. She decided to shake things up and leave the Lone Star State to join the UAB Internal Medicine family. She plans to pursue a career in academics and is interested in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. In her free time she enjoys live music, watching comedy specials, reading novels, and exploring the trails of Alabama with her two crazy dogs.

Catherine was born and raised in New Orleans, went to LSU for her undergraduate studies and then returned to New Orleans for medical school. She is very excited to live in Birmingham and begin her residency at UAB. She is currently doing her preliminary medicine year before starting her Dermatology residency at UT Austin Dell next year. Outside of medicine, Catherine enjoys traveling, cooking, snorkeling, running, and looking at pictures of her 2 dogs named Deuce and Toulouse, who still live in New Orleans. She is very excited about exploring the beautiful hiking trails of Birmingham, and can't wait to be part of the UAB family.

John Michael was born and raised in Shreveport, LA. He also graduated from both undergrad and medical school there before deciding to move to Birmingham. His decision to move was based largely on the academic success of the program, as well as the welcoming, friendly environment. He plans to pursue a fellowship in Gastroenterology after his Internal Medicine training. During his spare time he enjoys playing video games, watching Netflix, and playing with his golden retriever.

Cameron grew up in Sacramento, California and graduated from Notre Dame before moving to Houston for medical school at Baylor. There he met his wife, Rui, who matched at UAB for General Surgery.  Cameron hopes to pursue his interest in Hematology and Oncology after residency, but is eager to gain more exposure to other fields at UAB and delve into medical education.  In his free time, Cameron enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, and baking, and hopes to take advantage of all that Birmingham and the surrounding areas have to offer.

Nicholas RuizNicolas Ruiz

Nicolas was born and raised in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Early in his education he gained exposure by volunteering with U.S. medical brigades in rural areas of Honduras, which opened his eyes to his true calling. He moved to the United States in order to pursue higher education, and made the great state of Texas his home for undergraduate as well as medical school. Even after just a few days of exposure to the Birmingham ambiance, he knew this was the ideal place to further cultivate his medical skills during residency. The city, its food, its brews, and plenty of surrounding raw natural beauty were all essential, but above all, the pursuit of “Excellence without Ego” made the move to Alabama a no-brainer.

Kevin SchwalbachKevin Schwalbach

Kevin grew up in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, a small town just outside of the Twin Cities. He completed his undergraduate degree at DePaul University in Chicago. After taking 4 years off, working in Chicago and San Francisco, he ultimately moved back home to complete his medical school training. Although he never imagined moving to Birmingham, he and his girlfriend (an Otolaryngology Resident at UAB) are slowly falling in love with the city and its people. He plans to pursue a fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care but has an open mind about the future. He enjoys spending time at the local breweries and exploring the Birmingham food scene but will also always find time to sit on the couch with his Siamese cat, Douglas, and read his latest presidential biography.

Daniel ScullinDaniel Scullin

Daniel was born in New Orleans but was raised in nearby Harahan. He spent his undergraduate years at Emory in Atlanta before returning home for medical school in New Orleans. He is very excited to begin his residency at UAB. He is currently unsure of his future career plans and looks forward to exploring all of the opportunities residency has to offer. Outside of medicine he enjoys basketball, tennis, running, and cooking. He is eager to spend time with his fellow residents and hopes to take advantage of all that Birmingham has to offer.

Andrew ShafferAndrew Shaffer

Andy was born in northern Virginia, and he continued to explore his state by going to Richmond for his undergraduate education in Biology and Norfolk for medical school. Since his move to Birmingham, Andy has been embracing the Alabama lifestyle by eating lots of tasty food and flipping a coin to decide between Auburn and Alabama football fan hood. In his free time, Andy likes to ride his motorcycle, climb rocks and mountains, and teach his dog, Hodor, to hold the door.

Luke ShiversLuke Shivers

Luke was born in Salem, and he is the second of five children, with two brothers and two sisters. He studied nutritional biochemistry and metabolism at Case Western Reserve University before completing his medical degree at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He is thrilled to train at UAB in Internal Medicine and explore the southern part of the country.

Pat SimmonsPat Simmons

Undergraduate: University of Kentucky
Medical School: Medical College of Georgia
Pat was born and raised in the LaGrange, Georgia, home of the LaGrange High School “Grangers.” He chose to attend the University of Kentucky for athletics and academics. At UK, he was a walk-on placekicker for 4 years. In the Bluegrass state, he gained a passion for basketball and fast horses. As the son of an anesthesiologist and pulmonologist, he decided to pursue a career in medicine. Pat returned to Georgia to attend the Medical College of Georgia. He was drawn to internal medicine for its variety and breadth, possibly leaning towards procedural specialties. Pat is excited to begin his training at the historic Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency program. He is equally thrilled to explore the city of Birmingham. His interests include fly fishing, golf, exercising, going to concerts, and reliving the glory days.

Chad was born in New York but spent most of his childhood in south Florida. He went to the University of Florida (Go Gators!) for his undergraduate education and then attended the University of Central Florida for medical school. He was finally ready to make the move out of Florida and is excited to be living in Birmingham for residency. Chad plans to pursue a fellowship in gastroenterology following his residency training. In his free time, he enjoys weight lifting, watching New York Mets baseball, and being the commissioner of his annual fantasy football league.

Adam TaylorAdam Taylor

Adam was born and raised a Buckeye in Columbus, Ohio and is excited to be venturing into the great state of Alabama, both for the excellent medical training and to brag about the 2015 Sugar Bowl as much as possible. In his free time, he enjoys playing his ukulele (only 4 strings and it’s hard to sound bad) and staying as active as he can. His greatest athletic achievement is a tie between running a marathon and winning the doubles tournament in his racquetball class his last semester of undergrad. He is passionate about medical education but is otherwise undecided about future career plans.

Sirisha was born in a small city in southern India, and moved to Jacksonville, FL as a child. She stayed in Florida for undergrad and medical school, but decided to come to UAB residency for the fantastic people and the program. She has interests in GI and Rheumatology, but is keeping an open mind. She also has special interests in working with underserved populations, and global health. In her free time, you can find her watching Indian movies (a little too many in her opinion), and exploring her new home of Birmingham.

Raj was born in New York City but grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended UAB for his undergraduate degree and remained at UAB for medical school as well. After spending these eight years in Birmingham, he knew he didn’t want to leave and is thrilled to be at UAB for his Internal Medicine training. He is still unsure about which direction to take his career after residency but is open to many subspecialties. He enjoys attending concerts, watching basketball, cooking, and is a huge news junkie.

Allison was born in the small town of Blue Ridge, GA. She attended college at the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and then attended medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, GA. She is looking forward to doing her residency training at UAB. She hopes to pursue a career in either academic general internal medicine or rheumatology. In her free time, she enjoys watching Netflix, cooking, spending time with family, and watching UGA football games.

Star was born and raised in Georgia. She had only ever experienced Georgia, having completed all of her education and training there, up until she matched at UAB for residency. She immediately felt like UAB was a great fit for her because of the awesome people that she met at UAB. Plus, she really can't imagine leaving the South because you can't beat Southern hospitality! Star intends to pursue a hematology/oncology fellowship in the future not only because of her continued scientific interest in hematology/oncology but also because she believes that the patient population is extraordinary. In her free time, you can find her with a fiction book in one hand and a good cup of coffee in the other.

Sofia grew up in Lima, Peru; where she went to medical school at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. After obtaining her MD she worked as a research associate at the Alexander von Humboldt Tropical Medicine Institute and as the assistant clinical coordinator for the Gorgas Course. Sofia is excited about moving to Birmingham and thrilled to be doing her residency at UAB! She plans to pursue a career in Infectious Diseases with a focus in tropical medicine and global health in order to work overseas in the future.
