A maximum of four preliminary positions are available through the NRMP. Our preliminary interns function identically to categorical interns, except with some small changes in curriculum. Each preliminary intern is allotted an elective month of their choice, which many utilize to gain experience in their prospective fields. One month is also spent in the Emergency Department to fulfill ACGME requirements. We believe that with a strong foundation in internal medicine, our preliminary residents go on to excel in their future endeavors.
A sample schedule is shown. Preliminary Interns will have the opportunity to work at both University Hospital (UH) and the VA Hospital. Nine months are spent in the inpatient setting and three are spent in the outpatient setting. Three to four months are spent on General Medicine Wards, with another 2-3 months spent on UH subspecialty wards which include Nephrology, Pulmonary, Hematology/Oncology, and GI/Liver Services. Critical care experience is obtained in the MICU and CCU as well as the emergency department. A geriatrics rotation and an elective month complete the year.
