UAB Core Facilities
include state-of-the art equipment and expertise for: analytic genomics, high throughput sequencing, transgenic mouse production, biostatistics and bioinformatics, drug discovery, clinical research support, tissue procurement, flow cytometry, high resolution microscopy and imaging, histology, microbiome, gnotobiotic animals, small animal imaging, protein purification and analysis, mass spectrometry, proteomics, NMR, X-ray crystallography and many others.


Research Centers

UAB Research Centers
play a key role in fostering the collaborative atmosphere at UAB. These centers bring together faculty and students from diverse disciplines to address specific problems, and usually focus on a broad area of human disease like cancer. Cryo-Electron Microscopy

CryoEM2The cryo-EM facility is equipped with an FEI Tecnai F20 200kV, field-emission gun microscope specifically designed for high-resolution imaging of negatvely stained or cryogenically frozen, unstained samples (Cryo-EM). The instrument is suitable for imaging samples ranging from 200kDa protein complexes to entire prokaryotic cells. It is equipped with software for tomographic data collection. Images may be acquired on film or with a high-sensitivity, 4k x 4k-pixel Gatan CCD camera. The facility also has access to a Leica UC6 Ultracut microtome for cryogenic sectioning. A FEI Vitrobot Mark IV sample preparation device is used for "plunge-freezing" of native samples for cryo-EM.

Equipment Description


    LMD6  The Leica LMD6 enables users to isolate specific single cells or areas of tissue from sections or live cell culture. Also known as laser capture microdissection (LCM), the LMD is used to isolate samples for genomic, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and next generation sequencing (NGS) as well as live cells used for cloning or recultivation.
