Dear Faculty, Postdocs and Students,
Planning for the Microbiology Research Retreat is well underway and we expect that attendance will be at an all-time high because we are returning to one of our favorite venues, Joe Wheeler State Park. This is a week-end event scheduled for October 17-19th. The Micro retreat has always been a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty and postdocs to focus on science and to establish new collaborations away from the distractions of everyday life. As always, the department will pay for rooms and meals with the group (this covers all meals during the retreat).
There are some important guidelines for attendees at this year’s retreat. 1. All participants are expected to stay overnight. This is important since it is against UAB policy and state guidelines to pay for “no-show” rooms. 2. There will be social events in the evenings, during which both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be served. No one should plan on driving back to Birmingham.
We are finalizing the agenda, but we plan on scheduling the poster session on Friday night with keynote speaker Bill Jacobs on Saturday evening. Please register and submit abstracts online by October 1st. We are strongly encouraging all students and postdocs to submit abstracts, which will be selected for either poster or oral presentation. Lucrative prizes will be awarded for the best poster/oral presentations.
We look forward to seeing you at the retreat!
