Dr. Bashir has a M.B. and B.S. degree in Medicine from King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan. He also obtained a Masters in Public Health in epidemiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed an internal medicine internship at Southern IIlinois University at Springfield from 1992-1993 and also a combined internal medicine and neurology residency there from 1993-1997. From 1997-1999, he completed a neuroimmunology/MS fellowship under the leadership of John N. Whitaker, M.D., with the UAB Department of Neurology, and in March of 2000, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Neurology.

Currently Dr. Bashir is Director of the Division of Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis, Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center, Co-Director of the Center for Neuroimmunology, Director of the Neuroimmunology/Multiple Sclerosis Fellowship Program, Director of the Neurology Residency Program, Co-Director of the Center for Pediatric Onset Demyelinating Diseases, Medical Director of the Birmingham VA Multiple Sclerosis Clinic at the Birmingham Veterans Medical Center, and also Medical Director of the National MS Society Second Opinion Clinic for UAB and the National MS Society Alabama Chapter.
