Founded in 2010, the UAB Neurosurgery Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) serves as a catalyst for support of the Department of Neurosurgery through fundraising and advocacy efforts. WLC members include grateful patients and family members of patients whose lives have been touched by UAB Neurosurgery.

Led by President Ellen Jackson, the 42-member council seeks to secure philanthropic gifts to fund the Neurosurgery Clinical Research Scholars Program, with a current-use goal of $375,000 each year and an endowment goal of $7.5 million. The WLC funds a named Clinical Research Scholar with a portion of annual dues, which are $1,000 per member.

Meetings are held four times per year. Other activities include a welcome party for new neurosurgery residents and their spouses; small, targeted gatherings for potential donors to the Clinical Research Scholars Program; and “Adopt a Resident,” which pairs residents with members to facilitate a smooth transition to Birmingham for their residency years.

Ways to Fund a Clinical Research Scholar

Make a gift in any amount to support the Clinical Research Scholars program
Gifts in any amount will help sustain this important effort in the UAB Department of Neurosurgery. UAB gratefully accepts checks or credit card payments, and can set up monthly or quarterly credit card payments or bank drafts.

Leverage your gift through a corporate matching program
UAB qualifies as a 501c3 organization, which makes the University eligible for corporate matching programs, which often double the size of the original gift. If you or your spouse work for an organization that matches gifts, just submit the matching gifts form to UAB; we will do the rest.

Pool your gift with gifts from others
Examples: Five donors at $5,000/year, or two donors at $12,500/year, or even 10 donors at $2,500/year. These gifts may be paid quarterly, semi-annually or as a single gift. UAB also can set up monthly or quarterly credit card payments or bank drafts.

Make a gift of $25,000 to name a scholar
Your gift may be made with cash or appreciated securities, and may be paid quarterly, semi-annually or as a single gift.

Create an endowment of $500,000 to fully fund a scholar
This gift may be pledged over a period of up to five years, or may be done as part of your estate plan.

Fund a scholar while also building an endowment
Example: A gift of $125,000/year for five years will support a Clinical Research Scholar at $25,000 each year, with the remaining $100,000 going to endowment. At the end of five years, the endowment will generate $25,000 each year in perpetuity.
