James M. Markert, MD was elected a Fellow of the American Surgical Association (ASA) at their annual meeting in April 2013. ASA is America’s oldest and most prestigious surgical association, whose members are the world’s leading surgeons. The mission of the ASA ”is to be the premier organization for surgical science and scholarship and to provide a national forum for presenting the developing state of the art and science of general and sub-specialty surgery and the elevation of the standards of the medical/surgical profession.”
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Neurosurgery provides adult and pediatric neurosurgical services to Alabama and the southeastern United States. Our faculty consists of more than 17 neurosurgeons, many whom are considered world experts in the treatment of brain tumors, neurovascular conditions, spinal disorders, functional disorders, and pediatric conditions. In 2016 we were ranked No. 25 nationally and No. 5 among public institutions by U.S. News & World Report. We are also committed to advancing the field of neurosurgery through cutting-edge research. Our faculty includes five dedicated scientists and many of our physicians are active in basic and clinical research. In order to continue growth and advancement, we are committed to training the next generation of neurosurgeons through our residency and fellowship programs. At UAB Neurosurgery, residents and fellows develop outstanding surgical skills, and are trained in evidence-based medicine and clinical outcomes research techniques.
