Headshot.8.18Todd Peterson, M.D., has been named assistant dean for students. In this role, Peterson will report to and work closely with the associate dean for students to provide career support, professional development and advising services for students during their third and fourth years of medical school training. He will also work collaboratively with medical students, the directors of student affairs on the Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa campuses, the assistant dean for Community Engaged Scholarship and the assistant dean for Clinical Education.

“I’m excited to be joining the dedicated team in the office of medical student services,” said Peterson. “I look forward to being an advocate for our amazing group of students as they advance in their careers at UAB and beyond.”

Peterson has been a part of the UAB community since 2002 when he entered the School of Medicine. After graduating in 2006, he completed an internal medicine internship at Virginia Commonwealth University before returning to UAB for his emergency medicine residency training. Upon finishing his residency in 2010, Peterson became an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and in 2015, he was promoted to associate professor. During his time at UAB, Peterson has served as a clinical skills scholar, assistant residency program director, medical student rotation director, and learning community mentor.

“Dr. Peterson’s leadership will be essential in helping guide our medical students to the most successful paths possible,” said Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS, senior vice president for medicine and dean of the School of Medicine. “I am extremely confident in his ability to support them as well as the programs in Medical Student Services.”

Peterson will officially step into the role of assistant dean for students on Sept. 1, 2018.
