Chandler Stisher, fourth-year medical student at the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, has been elected as the student member of the board of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In this position, C. Stisher represents more than 2,000 medical students from across the country who participate in the organization. The AAFP board of directors develops policy and position papers on issues that concern family physicians. The election took place during the 2018 AAFP Residents and Students Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, Aug. 2-4, 2018.
C. Stisher entered the UAB School of Medicine though the Rural Medicine Program (RMP), which accepts students from rural Alabama with an interest in pursuing primary care medicine and returning to their home communities. The RMP includes a pre-matriculation year at Auburn University, two years in Birmingham and two years at the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus.
He will begin his one-year term on the AAFP Board in October 2018. Currently, C. Stisher is completing a one-year term as the AAFP national coordinator for the Family Medicine Interest Group. He is also currently pursuing a master of public health as a UAB Primary Care Scholar.
“It is an honor and privilege to be able to represent the diverse student voice to the AAFP Board of Directors,” said C. Stisher. As future family physicians, I believe it is vitally important for us to stay involved in organized medicine, and I am excited to see what happens in family medicine over the next year.”
This is the second time in six years that a RMP student has been selected to the AAFP Board of Directors. C. Stisher earned his bechelor's degree in biology from UAB in 2014. He is from Baileyton, Alabama. He is married to Amanda Stisher, who is also a fourth-year SOM student.
Amanda Stisher, a fourth-year medical student at the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, has been elected as student alternate delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates for 2018, and she will transition to become the student delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates for 2019. The Congress of Delegates meets once a year to set policy for the organization. Both Amanda and Chandler Stisher began their leadership roles with the AAFP in 2016-17 when they were selected for the highly competitive Emerging Leaders Institute class.
