Deadline extended for grant pilot fund applications

Written by
The application deadline for pilot funds available through the AMC21 Research Strategic Plan to submit extramural, multi-investigator grants has been extended to Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013.

The one-year grant funds will reinforce research collaborations and seed the planning and data collections required to submit competitive, multi-investigator grant applications. Funds will be competitively awarded to facilitate the development of multi-investigator programs within the School of Medicine and the Joint Health Sciences departments, centers and programs.

Each program should involve a minimum of three faculty members who will develop complementary, interdependent projects that support a common research theme. The program can include projects that are basic science, translational science or clinical science.

Applications should include a two-page executive summary outlining a 12-month plan for developing the extramural applications, including who is involved and how the funds will be used; specific benchmarks to be achieved, including progress toward submitting an extramural grant application within one year of the start date; and details showing how the investment will enable a competitive submission through an extramural funding mechanism.

Up to $50,000 per application can be requested for funds, which can be used for non-faculty personnel, equipment, supplies or other UAB-allowed expenses to facilitate grant application development. The expected disbursement date is Oct. 1, 2013.

An additional one-time payment of up to $50,000 can be requested following a successful extramural grant submission.

Applications are due Sept. 3 by 5 p.m. to Samika Williams, director of Continuing Medical Education, at samika@uab.edu. Proposals will be reviewed by a faculty committee constituted by the Dean’s office.
