On Friday, Nov. 16, MS1s Kara Kichler, Paris Malensek, Cassidy Baldwin and Steven Cochrun teamed up with MS4 David Osula and Harish Doppalapudi, M.D. to lead a cardiology workshop at George W. Carver High School. The instructional session concluded by teaching the students how to take a blood pressure reading.
Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS, dean of the School of Medicine, welcomed faculty members and their families to the Women in Medicine and Science Promotion Reception on Nov. 15 in the Partridge Atrium of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Laura B. Kezar, M.D., professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Medical Education and recently retired associate dean for students in the School of Medicine, co-wrote an article published in Academic Medicine describing the need to update Technical Standards for medical education.
Informatics researchers, professionals and educators from the UAB Informatics Institute had a strong presence at the AMIA 2018 Annual Symposium, held Nov. 3-7 in San Francisco. The symposium is the premier academic conference in biomedical informatics and is sponsored by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Over 2,200 people attended this year’s conference.
Earlier this year, fourth-year medical students had the opportunity to submit proposals for potential study trips to underserved communities around the globe. Of those applicants, eight students received study abroad scholarships from UAB’s International Medical Education (UAB IME).
Etty “Tika” Benveniste, Ph.D., has been named the senior vice dean for Basic Sciences at UAB School of Medicine by Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., F.A.C.S., senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the UAB School of Medicine.
Richard Whitley, M.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics, was recently named an Honorary Fellow by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in recognition of his significant contributions to medicine.
