Biography

Dr. Sara Gould is currently an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Department of Emergency Medicine at University of Alabama at Birmingham. She serves on the ambulatory clinical leadership team for the department of orthopedics. She is the co-director of the Concussion Clinic at Children’s of Alabama. She developed an infusion clinic for pediatric post-traumatic headache management at Children’s of Alabama.  She also runs an exercise in pregnancy clinic and a sports cardiology clinic, in conjunction with Dr. Cawyer (Maternal Fetal Medicine) and Dr. Hebson (pediatric cardiology). 

Dr. Gould completed her residency in emergency medicine at New York University Hospital Center/Bellevue Hospital. During this time, she provided medical coverage for a variety of sports events such as Yankee’s and Ranger’s games. She then went on to complete a fellowship in non-operative sports medicine at North Shore University Hospital System.

As part of her fellowship, Dr. Gould was active in sports sideline coverage, from high school football teams to the NBA All-Star games. She has served as medical director for a number of NBA events since that time. Dr. Gould served as the team physician for the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s women’s basketball team. Dr. Gould is also registered in musculoskeletal sonography (RMSK), credentialed by The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) to perform musculoskeletal sonography.

Dr. Gould’s research interests include exercise in pregnancy and pediatric/adolescent concussion. Her research has been funded by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the March of Dimes. She presented her research on exercise in pregnancy at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Monaco, Nov. 2021. She also presented her research on equestrian helmets at the 6th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport in Amsterdam October 2022.
