Sam Perna, D.O., was born in West Virginia. He moved to Alabama as an adolescent and attended Tuscaloosa County High School graduating in 1987. He then attended the University of Alabama and received his undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in English in 1991. He continued at the University of Alabama and received his Master's degree in Counseling in 1995.
After a four years of providing psychotherapy to children, adults and families, he entered the Kansas City School of Medicine and Biosciences and graduated in 2003. Dr. Perna then served an internship and residency in Family Medicine at Broward General Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL from 2003 to 2006. Following residency, he entered private practice in Family Medicine & Urgent Care in south Florida where he practiced until December of 2007.
Dr. Perna furthered his Post Doctoral education at UAB as a Palliative Medicine Fellow. Four days after his graduation from fellowship, Dr. Perna joined the Center for Palliative Care at UAB in January of 2009 as Assistant Professor. Currently, Dr. Perna serves as a Palliative Medicine Physician at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Birmingham, he also is the Birmingham Medical Director for Alacare Home Health and Hospice and is the Medical Director for Children's Hospital Palliative Medicine Service. He is board certified in Family Medicine and is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Perna enjoys his leisure time spent with his wife, Carla and stepsons, Zachary and Nathan. He is an avid, amateur photographer.
