UAB Medical Center

UAB University Hospital
UAB University Hospital is a 1132-bed facility that serves as a tertiary referral center for the state of Alabama and beyond.  As one of the largest academic medical centers  in the nation, UAB encompasses 11 city blocks and houses the only NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center, level 1 trauma center, and regional neonatal ICU in Alabama.
      
          
     



Palliative Care & Comfort Unit (PCCU)

Located within UAB University Hospital, the PCCU is a 12-bed inpatient palliative care unit that was created through generous support from UAB health system and the community.  Acclaimed as a calm and supportive environment for patients and families,  the PCCU has provided holistic, patient-centered care to over 2000 patients and families since it opened in 2006.





Birmingham VA Medical Center

BVAMC

The BVAMC is a 313-bed facility located in downtown Birmingham, across the street from UAB University Hospital.  It provides primary care services to Birmingham’s veterans and serves as the main referral center for the state of Alabama.

     


     


Safe Harbor
Safe Harbor
The Safe Harbor is a 10-bed inpatient palliative care unit located within the BVAMC that opened in 2005. Here veterans are admitted for acute symptom management, respite, or terminal care. Currently two beds are used as an Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit for frail veterans, staffed jointly with Geriatrics.

With the opening of its expansion facility in 2012, Children’s of Alabama became the third largest pediatric hospital in the nation.  Located just a block from UAB University Hospital, it serves as the primary pediatric referral center for the state of Alabama.  The Palliative & Supportive Care team has been seeing pediatric inpatient and outpatient consults there since 2009.





Supportive Care & Survivorship Clinic
Supportive Care and Survivorship Clinic
Within UAB’s Kirklin Clinic, one of the busiest outpatient clinics in the nation, the Supportive Care & Survivorship Clinic takes an interdisciplinary approach to caring for patients with serious illness.  Designed by noted architect I. M. Pei, the Kirklin Clinic is a five-story 454,000 square foot outpatient facility that houses over 600 physicians in nearly every specialty of adult medicine.





HIV Palliative Care Clinic

As the largest HIV health care center in Alabama, the 1917 Clinic has provided access to HIV-infected adults since 1998. The HIV Palliative Care Clinic opened in 2002 with a focus on improving quality of life, whether through comprehensive pain and symptom management or through guidance with advance care planning and hospice when appropriate.
