The Division of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham, offers a one-year ACGME-approved fellowship experience in Cytopathology. The University of Alabama Cytopathology Laboratory performs approximately 30,000 tests per year, mostly PAP-smears; including approximately 1,000 fluids, 500 fine needle aspirations, and 1,300 pulmonary examinations per year. Opportunities for elective rotation in sub-specialty areas of Surgical Pathology are available. Participation in on-going clinical studies, including the NCI-ALTS clinical study of ASCUS/LSIL diagnosis as well as other basic and clinical research projects within the Cytopathology Section and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is also encouraged. Rotations are entirely at the University of Alabama Hospital and the physically connected Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital.
