Critical Care Services
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 22 bed unit that admits children with conditions that require intensive or close monitoring. The age of patients range from 1 day to 18 years. This fast paced unit admits approximately 1400 patients per year with diagnosis such as Trauma, Respiratory Failure, Ingestion, and surgical diagnosis such as Spinal Fusion, Crainiotomy and ENT surgery. The new cardiovascular intensive care unit is a state of the art 20 bed unit. This unit cares for over 500 cases per year.
The division has an active, accredited fellowship program.
The Division serves as a referral unit for Alabama, eastern Mississippi, western Georgia, south central Tennessee, and the Florida panhandle.
The Critical Care Division also supports medical transport with helicopter, jet, and ground ambulance service for critically ill or injured children. A transport team is available 24 hours a day for referral of critically ill patients to Children’s of Alabama.
