FacultyBrian Sims, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics and cell, developmental and integrative biology, has been recognized with the 2013 Graduate Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship. His nominator says, “Dr. Sims constantly motivated us to elevate and exceed our goals. He always remained optimistic and pushed us to never lower our goals when faced with obstacles and difficulties. In the past, when I have thought about quitting or exploring easer roads, Dr. Sims always took the time to sit down and talk to me to help me regain my focus.” ***** ***** ***** UAB Healthcare Leadership Class of 2013 Selects Two Pediatricians Congratulations to Pediatric Drs. Shannon Ross and Marjorie Lee White who have been selected to participate in the HLA Class of 2013. The purpose of the HLA is to establish a cohesive and comprehensive program that offers training opportunities and helps develop essential skills for leaders in the 21st century academic health center. In part, this is accomplished by providing present and future leaders with a broader understanding of the responsibilities as leaders, new perspective on critical leadership and managerial issues they face, and a deeper understanding and awareness of concepts and techniques relevant to management. (Related article) ***** Dean and Vice President, Ray Watts and Associate Dean for Students, Laura Kezar, are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Annalise Sorrentino to the position of Assistant Dean for Students. Dr. Sorrentino is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Emergency Medicine. She obtained her BA and MD degrees from the University of Missouri - Kansas City and did her pediatrics residency and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at UAB. She joined the faculty in 2003 and has been active in many aspects of medical education. We are delighted to welcome her to Medical Student Services. ***** ***** David Kimberlin, MD, Professor and Co-Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, has been accepted into the cohort of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs (AMSPDC) Pediatric Leadership Development Program for 2013. ***** Roger Berkow, MD, FAAP, Professor and Vice Chair of Pediatric Academic Affairs, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief for PREP Self-Assessment for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
***** Dr. David Kimberlin, Sergio Stagno, M.D., Endowed Chair in Infectious Diseases Professor and Co-Division Director, has been appointed Editor of the Red Book Report of Committee on Infectious Disease, American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Kimberlin currently serves as the President of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. ***** Waldemar A. Carlo, M.D., professor of neonatology in the UAB Department of Pediatrics, was honored with a 2012 President’s Award for Diversity for his devotion to improving outcomes for low-birth-weight infants in Alabama. He works to combat infant mortality in developing countries and has mentored more than 50 postdoctoral trainees of diverse cultural backgrounds. Megan, a 2nd year Pediatrics Resident, has been chosen for the 2 year position as the AAP liaison to the AMA for residents and fellows. This means that she will be representing all pediatric residents and fellows to the AMA. This is a great honor and responsibility! It is with great pleasure that we announce the selection of Drs. Tori Anderson, Catherine Hough-Telford, and Adam Johnson as Pediatric Co-Chief Residents for the 2013-2014 academic year. Drs. Clay Cohen, Cassandra Smola and Nicki Sims have been selected as Pediatric Co-Chief Residents for the 2014-2015 academic year. 2013 Resident Awards Quarterback Club Subspecialty Education Award - Sergio Stagno, M.D. Friend of the Housestaff Award - Ralph E. Tiller, M.D. Distinguished Faculty Award - Michele St. Romain Housestaff Award - 2012-2013 LaRussa Interns of the Year- Dept News2013 UAB Perinatal Conference is scheduled for July 12, 2013 in the Bradley Lecture Center. The 2013 Palmisano Award was presented to Kara Graves by Drs. Hussein Abdullatif, Roger Berkow and Sergio Stagno. The Palmisano Award is given annually to the UASOM senior medical student who, in the opinion of the pediatric faculty, best demonstrates excellence in pediatrics, a passion for learning, a desire to share knowledge through example, and compassion for the needs of children and their families. These principles, exemplifying the life of Dr. Palmisano, indicate this individual's potential for contribution to the medical community and are indicative of the highest quality work and scholarship. ***** The Cunningham program was established by Dr. Sergio Stagno, Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, to honor the memory of Dr. Russell Cunningham, a long time member of the Department of Pediatrics and strong advocate for medical student education. The program is designed to introduce students to pediatrics and pediatric research. UASOM medical students completing their first year, with an interest in Pediatrics apply for this eight week summer internship and research program. The two competitively selected students work with a mentor in the Department of Pediatrics responsible for helping the student design a summer research program and for providing the student an opportunity to attend a variety of Pediatric Clinics and/or hospital rounds and conferences. An award of $3200.00 is given to the successful candidates. SSPR Awards were presented to the following Department of Pediatrics faculty and fellows:

Dr. Michele Kong Maha has won the The Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Developement Award for her proposal RSV-induced Respiratory Failure: Role of MMP-9 in Lung Injury through Generation of PGP. The Program is funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and provides K level funding for 2-3 years. |
