The Division evaluates and treats over 7,000 outpatients each year in its UAB facilities and its outpatient clinics in Dothan. In conjunction with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology's inpatient services include a 33-bed unit at University Hospital especially designed for the care of young people with heart disease. Its staff is comprised of eight Pediatric Cardiologists, who provide inpatient consultation services for children in all Birmingham area hospitals, including Children's of Alabama. Division faculty also provide echocardiogram and other interpretation services through telemedicine links with other major hospitals in Alabama. The Division performs approximately 600 diagnostic, interventional, and electrophysiologic cardiac catheterization procedures annually. Almost 400 cardiac surgeries are performed at the University of Alabama each year and the pediatric cardiac transplantation program is one of the largest in the region. The Pediatric Division of Cardiology offers comprehensive state-of-the-art diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired heart disease in the fetus, infant, child, and adolescent, and continues this care for adult patients with our Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic.
