Between-Hospital Variation in Treatment and Outcomes in Extremely Preterm Infants

Researchers, including UAB's Dr. Wally Carlo, director of the division of neonatology, set out to determine why survival rates among extremely premature babies varied so much from hospital to hospital. They found that some hospitals rarely provided active treatment to babies born at 22, 23 or 24 weeks, according to data from nearly 5,000 births at 24 hospitals. The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, is highlighted in the following articles:
