Facility and Clinical Experience

The Sleep Disorder Center at Children's of Alabama is one of the busiest pediatric sleep disorder centers in the country.  The center is an 8 bed facility and performs over 1500 sleep studies per year.  Infants and children with a wide variety of sleep disorders are evaluated on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.  Areas of particular interest include behavioral management of pediatric sleep disorders including positive airway pressure therapy in children with developmental disabilities, movement disorders, pediatric narcolepsy, pediatric insomnia, sleep related breathing disorders in children with neuromuscular disorders and sleep disturbances in children with chronic disease. 

Services include a new patient sleep disorder clinic, follow-up sleep disorders clinic, positive airway pressure clinic, actigraphy, light therapy, and readily available consultative services by pediatric neurology, otolaryngology, nutrition, and social work.  In addition, inpatient consults are intermittently available through the pediatric sleep inpatient consult service.

David Lozano, MD - Medical Director, Board Certified in Sleep Medicine.  Special interests - Sleep related breathing abnormalities in pediatric sleep related needs of children with home ventilation, respiratory needs of children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and sleep disturbances in children with chronic disease, pediatric narcolepsy.

Kristin Avis, PhD, (Board Certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine) • Special interests – Compliance with positive airway therapy for children with developmental disabilities, behavioral therapy for children with pediatric insomnia, daytime consequences of sleep deprivation and sleep disorders.

Susan Harding, MD - Medical Director, Board Certified in Sleep Medicine. Research interests include sleep related GER, sleep disorders and pregnancy complications.

Amy W. Amara, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Board certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine; Research interests include sleep disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease and Movement disorders of sleep, including restless legs syndrome and REM sleep behavior disorder, complication/preterm delivery risk, and the relationship of sleep related breathing disorders to difficult to manage hypertension.  Multiple sources of funding including American Heart Association, NIH and Health Services Foundation General Endowment Fund.

UAB Highlands Sleep Disorder Center

Facility and Clinical Experience:

This is an 10 bed accredited sleep disorder center located within the University Medical Complex. The center provides outpatient evaluations, inpatient consults and sleep testing for adults with a wide variety of sleep disorders. The center has a long track record of clinical excellence, productive research and training sleep medicine fellows.
