Since 1993, the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine have supported a Combined Residency Training Program in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds).
The training is fully accredited, meeting all the requirements regarding combined programs as set forth by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Pediatrics and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Completion of the training program leads to eligibility to take both board certifying examinations and subspecialization in either area (or both!).
Unlike almost any other field, a Med-Peds program must provide full training and qualification in two separate specialties. We believe this can only be accomplished at a high level of clinical success by seeing a high volume of patients, a broad diversity of clinical material, a strong teaching faculty in both disciplines and a commitment to the education of house officers.
Our residents are responsible for the care of patients with a wide variety of medical illnesses ranging from those routinely encountered in primary care practice to those only seen in a tertiary-care setting. Each member of the residency program is at times the student and at other times the teacher. The enthusiasm to learn and to teach characterizes both the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics.
