Taking advantage of the unique partnership between UAB, Children's of Alabama, our Pediatric Residency program is able to provide a unique depth and breadth of pediatric experiences.

The Department of Pediatrics Faculty provides a diverse and extensive spectrum of medical expertise and health care services, from primary care to subspecialty services. Currently there are over 160 full-time faculty in general pediatrics and subspecialty divisions.

The faculty of the Department of Pediatrics records more than 160,000 outpatient visits, including approximately 50,000 patients seen through the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division. More than 9,800 subspecialty patients and general pediatric inpatient admissions are managed by the Pediatric Faculty and Residents. In addition, the Neonatology Division provides coverage for the Women and Infant's Center that opened in 2010 as well as four private, not-for-profit community hospitals. Total inpatient days are in excess of 74,000.

The Department of Pediatrics has a major commitment to research and consistently ranks in the top 20 among all Departments of Pediatrics in the country in NIH funding. Through research, we are contributing to a better understanding of the causes of many life-threatening diseases as well as advancing many new forms of treatment.  US News & World Report ranks UAB Department of Pediatrics  and its subspecialties among America's Best Graduate Schools year after year. 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is the sponsoring institution for graduate medical education. Connected by walkways to Children's of Alabama, the UAB Health System is world-renowned for education, research, patient care and innovation. UAB Hospital is a 900+ bed state-of-the-art facility dedicated to top quality medical care.

The free-standing Children's of Alabama Hospital provides exceptional pediatric-specific training and patient care.  Children's of Alabama, adjacent to the UAB Hospital Complex is a 300 bed Children's facility, serving as a resource to the entire state and region.  The Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children opened in August 2012 and provides State of the Art facilities with individual ICU beds, specialty specific floors, and an expanded Surgery Department.
