When you join our Pediatric Residency Program, you join our family. The social calendar is full from the beginning of the year with both ‘adult’ and 'kid-friendly' events. The following are but a few of the highlights of the year.

Weekly Social Lunch
Everyone deserves a break! To close-out the week, on Fridays regular noon conference is replaced with resident Social Lunch in the lounge. After a few general announcements, it’s time to just sit and talk. Spouses, children and significant others are all welcome (and regularly attend) the lunch. This time, scheduled during the workday, allows all of our residents to decompress at the end of a busy week.

Peds Timeout
A Get-Together is scheduled at one of the local Birmingham or area ‘hot-spots’ for some food, drinks, and laughs. Sometimes its pizza and beer - other times its a heated game of faculty versus resident dodge ball or kickball. We're always open to suggestions and it's a great way to check out new places in Birmingham you might not have found otherwise!

Halloween Kick Off
To start off the recruiting season (and have a little fun), the UAB Pediatric Residency sponsors a skit and costume contest every year at Halloween. The skits are hilarious, the faculty and administration hand out prizes (From days off of jeopardy call to the Program Director's covering a night in the PICU, the competition is fierce.), and in general we explore all the perks and quirks that make our program unique!

Holiday Parties
A Pediatric Residency Holiday Party is held every year for the residents at a large local estate. Each class shows up in their holiday best and kids run in circles showing off the toys that "Santa" left under the tree. Faculty and fellows cover the hospital for the night and the entire program begins the holiday season together! |

Resident Retreats
Every class has a day long retreat each year. The directors check in with each class at the beginning of the day and then they are sent out to just hang out and catch up as a class. Every class plans their own – in the past they have done everything from skiing on the lake to bowling and a cookout.
Intern Retreat- For intern retreat, we load up van and take off to Camp McDowell for an overnight trip of fun, fun, fun. During intern retreat, you will get to know your class and create memories that will stay with you throughout residency. From the ropes course to late night card games – this is the weekend where you really start feeling like a family.

Dodge Ball and Kick Ball
Every fall and spring the faculty comes out to play the residents in dodge ball (fall) and kick ball (spring). The competition is intense and bragging rights are secured for an entire year. Start practicing now!

Birmingham Barons- At least once a year, we cheer in the Birmingham Barons, the local AA farm team for the Chicago White Sox. You can also find a contingent of residents on the third base line on Thirsty Thursdays during the duration of the season.
Every class plans their own activities as well – whether it’s a monthly pot-luck, yearly beach weekend, or annual holiday parties – each class leaves residency with their own traditions.
