Leading the way in precision medicine
Precision medicine is a concept reshaping the way we think about human health, diagnosis and treatment of disease. It focuses on individual patients to understand how their lifestyles, behavior, environment and genetics interact to affect their health. More importantly, this allows a systematic approach to integrate these factors into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease tailored to the individual patient.
At UAB, we integrate efforts related to discovery with implementation studies to advance new approaches to precision medicine to the clinic as rapidly as possible. Our multidisciplinary efforts in each of these domains capitalize on the strengths of the UAB Health System, Heersink School of Medicine, University of Alabama Health Services Foundation and our strategic partners, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and Southern Research.
The Hugh Kaul Foundation generously gave $7 million to establish the UAB Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute in order to pave the way for significant growth and acceleration of precision medicine in Alabama, the region and beyond.
