nakazawa001The Department is delighted to announce the recruitment of Kazu Nakazawa, M.D., Ph.D., to the UAB Department of Psychiatry.  He currently serves as Chief of the Unit of the Genetics of Cognition and Behavior Department at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH/NIH), where he has worked for the past ten years.  Dr. Kazu received his medical degree and Ph.D. from Keio University in Tokyo, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the prestigious RIKEN institute in Japan. He next moved to the Picower Center for Learning and Memory at MIT where he was a postdoctoral fellow of Susumu Tonegawa.  He moved to NIH following these postdoctoral fellowships.  His research uses a number of cutting edge research techniques, and has focused on molecular substrates of learning and memory and most recently animal models of major psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia. His laboratory office will be located on 11th floor of the Shelby building.

Irena Bukelis, M.D., Joins UAB Psychiatry

 irena 3 The UAB Department of Psychiatry is delighted to announce that Dr. Irena Bukelis has accepted the invitation to join the faculty of the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, 2015. She will be appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Bukelis’s clinical and teaching responsibilities will be largely at Children's of Alabama. Dr. Bukelis is a graduate of Kaunas University of Medicine in Kaunas, Lithuania. She subsequently spent a number of years as a Center and Research Coordinator at the Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Dr. Bukelis then came to UAB where she completed her General Psychiatry Residency before transferring to the UAB Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is presently completing her final year of the fellowship, where she has distinguished herself as a wonderful clinician, and currently serves as one of our Chief Residents for the fellowship. In Baltimore Dr. Bukelis was very involved in research related to autism. Most recently she has helped steward the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s QI projects related to atypical antipsychotic use in children and adolescents.

Laurence McMillan, M.D., Joins UAB Psychiatry

 Picture121 The UAB Department of Psychiatry is delighted to announce that Dr. Laurence McMillan has accepted the invitation to join the faculty of the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, effective July 15, 2015. He will be appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His clinical and teaching responsibilities will be largely at Children's of Alabama. Dr. McMillan is a graduate of Meharry School of Medicine, and completed his General Psychiatry Residency at UAB before transferring to the UAB Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is presently completing his final year of the fellowship, where he has distinguished himself as a wonderful clinician, and currently serves as one of our Chief Residents for the fellowship. Dr. McMillan volunteers in the community teaching children meditation skills.
