Training Director

A primary goal of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine is excellence in the training of psychiatric residents and fellows.  Our efforts focus on ensuring each resident will practice competent, state-of-the-art, modern psychiatry after graduation.

Psychiatry residents will have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to ensure competence in the six Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education General Competencies:  Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Practice-Based Learning, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Care.  Additionally, prior to completion of the residency, psychiatry residents will be competent in five psychotherapies:  Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Supportive, Brief Therapy, and Combined Therapy.

I want to thank you for considering our accomplished program. As an upcoming resident you are about to make one of the most important decisions in your life … choosing your field.
  • Where can you make the greatest impact?
  • Where can you contribute the most?
  • Where can you be the proudest of your accomplishments?
My answer to your questions is – in the Psychiatry Residency Program.

Our program is both, challenging and rewarding, while still offering you the flexibility to pave your own way in the psychiatric field. With a wealth of opportunities at UAB, I welcome the chance to discuss these opportunities in further detail with you. Remember, surrounding yourself with excellent faculty, staff, and facilities is what the UAB Psychiatry Residency Program promises.
