Dr. Rachel Fargason Appointed Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, Department of Psychiatry

The UAB Department of Psychiatry is delighted to announce that Rachel E. Fargason, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, has been appointed to the role of Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs effective January 1, 2015.  In addition to her outstanding service as a clinician, educator, and clinical investigator, over the course of the last two years she has distinguished herself in several key administrative roles.  Initially assuming the role of Medical Director for Outpatient Psychiatry, she more recently became the faculty leader of the Medical Student Clinic held on Tuesday evenings.   She then began a transition into higher level clinical leadership and excelled in the role of Director of Psychiatric Clinical Services for the Department of Psychiatry.  We are pleased to recognize Dr. Fargason for her outstanding contributions to our myriad clinical missions and congratulate her on her most recent appointment as one of the departmental Vice Chairs.

Aaron D. Fobian, Ph.D. joins UAB Psychiatry

Aarons headshot 2The UAB Department of Psychiatry is delighted to  announce the recruitment of Aaron D. Fobian, PhD, as an assistant professor in the Division of Behavioral Neurobiology, Department of Psychiatry effective September 1, 2014.  Dr. Fobian was recruited from the UAB Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine where she is currently serving as a psychology postdoctoral fellow.   She received her BA in Psychology from Samford University in  2008, an MA in Clinical Psychology from UAB in 2010, and after completing her Clinical Internship at Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, she received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from UAB in 2013.  She is a well-trained, research-oriented psychologist who will divide her time between providing clinical care and teaching, and developing a research program.  Her major research interests include sleep, metabolism, and obesity in adolescents.

Stephan Meadors, M.D., Joins UAB Psychiatry

Stephan-Meadors1 2Stephan Meadors, MD, has joined the Department as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry following the completion of his residency.  He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina, and his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.  He was matched into our general psychiatry residency program four years ago, and will provide clinical care and teach as a faculty member. Dr. Meadors will also rotate through our adult inpatient, emergency department, and consultation services.

Dr. James Meador-Woodruff Elected to Serve as Member of the ACNP Council

james meador woodruff webThe American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) has elected James H. Meador-Woodruff, MD, Heman E. Drummond Professor and Chair of the UAB Department of Psychiatry to a three year term as a member of its Council starting in December 2014 . The ACNP was founded in 1961 and is the nation's premier professional society in brain, behavior, and psychopharmacology research.  The ACNP promotes communication among a broad range of scientific disciplines of brain and behavior in order to increase our understanding of the causes of disorders of the nervous system, and encourage new lines of research addressing the prevention and treatment of psychiatric, neurological, behavioral and addictive disorders.

Department Names New Chief Residents

Brackett StephenHawkins AaronThe Department is pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Brackett (pictured left) and Dr. Aaron Hawkins (pictured right) have been appointed as Chief Residents for the 2014 – 2015 academic year.

Dr. Hawkins is from Birmingham, Alabama. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and he received his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine. His Psychiatry interests are in Addiction, Forensic and General Adult Psychiatry.

Dr. Brackett is from Gadsden, Alabama. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Jacksonville State University and he received his medical degree from The University of Alabama School of Medicine. His Psychiatry interests are in Addiction, Consult, and General Adult Psychiatry.
