UAB Psychiatry Supports AFSP in Out of the Darkness Walk

AFSP-2012-TeamOhotoThe UAB Department of Psychiatry participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk at Heardmont Park on November 4th, 2012. The Alabama Chapter of AFSP hosted several walks throughout the state this year with over $150,000 raised and more than 2,500 people participating.  UAB Psychiatry had a great team this year with faculty, staff, residents, and family members. We want to thank all of those that participated in the walk and encourage everyone in the Alabama community to join us next year.

These walks raise funds for much needed outreach and education in the community. Proceeds from the 2012 Out of the Darkness Walk provided suicide prevention DVD’s to every public and private high school and college in the state of Alabama. Alabama is the only state to have this resource system-wide. The major initiative for 2012 was to provide suicide prevention training, at no charge, to all teaching professionals throughout the state.
