Meador-Woodruff-JamesJames Meador-Woodruff, M.D., Heman E. Drummond Professor and Chair, is the recipient of the Paul Hoch Distinguished Service Award which was presented to him this week at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) 2013 annual meeting.  This award is given periodically to a member of ACNP in recognition of exceptional service to the College.  He was selected for this award for his accomplishments as Editor-In-Chief of ACNP’s Journal, Neurophychopharmacology from 2006 – 2012.

Fargason-RachelRachel Fargason, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, has been named as Medical Director of the Outpatient Clinics of the Department of Psychiatry.  In this role, Dr. Fargason will serve as the Department's physician leader overseeing clinical activities in our CPM and EFH based clinics.  In addition, she will also oversee our soon to be launched Medical Student clinic which is anticipated to begin in January 2014. She follows in the footsteps Dr. Richard Powers, M.D. The Department thanks Dr. Powers for his effective stewardship of this role during a period of great transition.

Filler-ResearchUAB Psychiatry is proud to announce that six faculty members were named to the 2013 ‘Best Doctors’ list. The Best Doctors in America list includes the nation’s most respected specialists and primary care physicians. These are the doctors that other doctors recognize as the best in their fields. Choosing from thousands of the nation’s top physicians, six psychiatrists within the Department were included in this latest edition of the Best Doctors in America. Among these were Drs. Lee Ascherman, Jacqueline Feldman, James Meador-Woodruff, Samuel Rubin, F. Cleveland Kinney, and Richard Shelton.

WallaceMarionThe Department is delighted to announce, Marion Wallace, PhD, has joined UAB Psychiatry an assistant professor in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Wallace completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA, and her master’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in child psychology. Her PhD was awarded from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2012. Dr. Wallace joins the Department as the clinical director for the Department of Mental Health (DMH) child and adolescent inpatient unit.

Walk2The UAB Department of Psychiatry participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk at Heardmont Park on November 3rd, 2013. The Alabama Chapter of AFSP hosted several walks throughout the state this year with over $160,000 raised and nearly 2,500 people participating.  UAB Psychiatry had a great team with over 40 registered participants including faculty, staff, residents, and family members. The Department was ranked 6th out of 101 teams in fundraising efforts and registered participants.
