Dr. Lee Ascherman receives UAB President’s Diversity Award
On January 25th, 2011 Lee Ascherman, M.D. received the 2011 UAB President’s Diversity Award for a Faculty Member from President Garrison at the annual Diversity Banquet. Dr. Ascherman received this honor for his tireless efforts to promote diversity in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and throughout the entire department, and his exemplary track record of recruiting, training, and retaining one of the most ethnically and racially diverse groups in the entire university.
Dr. Cheryl McCullumsmith receives HSF funding
Congratulations to Dr. Cheryl McCullumsmith on the recent funding by the Health Services Foundation (HSF) General Endowment Fund of $200,000 for her multidisciplinary and cross-department project entitled “Screening and Brief Treatment for Substance Use Disorders in the Emergency Department.” This project starts March 2011.
Dr. Dahl and Dr. Steele attend the MASA Inaugural Reception
|Dr. Dan Dahl and Dr. Terri Steele recently visited with Governor Robert Bentley at the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA) inaugural reception. Dr. Dahl took this opportunity to thank Governor Bentley for his visit to the spring Alabama Psychiatry Society (APS) meeting in Tuscaloosa, and Governor Bentley pledged his continued support to the APS. Drs. Dahl and Steele also met with U.S. Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin, M.D. Dr. Benjamin expressed her support for psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry, in particular.|
New Assistant Professor, Marjorie Person, M.D., Arrives At UAB Psychiatry
The UAB Department of Psychiatry would like to announce the recent arrival of Marjorie Person, M.D. Dr. Person is an Assistant Professor specializing in the area of consult/liaison psychiatry. She has a special interest in assisting in the emergency room and clinical interests in psychotherapy and borderline personality disorder. Dr. Person has a B.S. in chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana. She completed her medical degree in 2005 from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and finished her residency in Adult Psychiatry at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Person’s specialties will offer the Birmingham community a valuable resource when it comes to combating mental illness. Please join us in welcoming her to the department. She will be a wonderful asset to our UAB Psychiatry family.
UAB Psychiatry Administrator Named Commissioner of Mental Health
UAB Hospital administrator named Commissioner of Mental Health – Zelia Baugh has been named by Governor-elect Robert Bentley to be Commissioner of Mental Health. Baugh is currently the administrator of psychiatry at UAB’s Center for Psychiatric Medicine.
