UAB Psychiatrists Make 'Best Doctors' List

The Best Doctors in America list includes the nation’s most respected specialists and primary care physicians. These are the doctors that other doctors recognize as the best in their fields. Choosing from thousands of the nation’s top physicians, six psychiatrists within the Department were included in this latest edition of the Best Doctors in America. Among these were Drs. Lee Ascherman, Jacqueline Feldman, James Meador-Woodruff, Samuel Rubin, F. Cleveland Kinney, and Richard Shelton.

Marion Wallace, PhD, Joins UAB Psychiatry

WallaceMarionThe Department is delighted to announce, Marion Wallace, PhD, has joined UAB Psychiatry an assistant professor in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Wallace completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA, and her master’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in child psychology. Her PhD was awarded from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2012. Dr. Wallace joins the Department as the clinical director for the Department of Mental Health (DMH) child and adolescent inpatient unit.

UAB Psychiatry Supports AFSP in Out of the Darkness Walk

Walk2The UAB Department of Psychiatry participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk at Heardmont Park on November 3rd, 2013. The Alabama Chapter of AFSP hosted several walks throughout the state this year with over $160,000 raised and nearly 2,500 people participating.  UAB Psychiatry had a great team with over 40 registered participants including faculty, staff, residents, and family members. The Department was ranked 6th out of 101 teams in fundraising efforts and registered participants.

Richard Powers, M.D., Named Medical Director for Outpatient Services

powersI am delighted to announce that Dr. Richard Powers has been named as the new medical director for outpatient services, with oversight of all outpatient operations in both the EFH and CPM clinics. He returned to UAB as an outpatient psychiatrist with the Department after having retired from UAB several years ago, followed by service at the Tuscaloosa VA.  He has also served as the Medical Director for the Alabama Department of Mental Health, a role in which he was of considerable influence and support as the Department sought funds to expand residency programs.  He is truly multifaceted and talented, trained as both a neuropathologist and a geriatric psychiatrist.

Kazu Nakazawa, M.D., Ph.D., Joins UAB Psychiatry

nakazawa001The Department is delighted to announce the recruitment of Kazu Nakazawa, M.D., Ph.D., to the UAB Department of Psychiatry.  He currently serves as Chief of the Unit of the Genetics of Cognition and Behavior Department at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH/NIH), where he has worked for the past ten years.  Dr. Kazu received his medical degree and Ph.D. from Keio University in Tokyo, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the prestigious RIKEN institute in Japan.
