Programs and Services:

The Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was established more than 30 years ago. We are a consultation service, and evaluate inpatients and outpatients referred for ECT by their psychiatrists. Outpatients are seen at the ECT clinic to review the history and assess the need for ECT. If deemed as an appropriate ECT candidate, we will discuss the risks and benefits of ECT treatment for you. You will get a complete medical evaluation, including anesthesia consultations as needed.

Features:

ECT is commonly used in treatment of catatonia, severe depression, neuroleptic malignant syndrome and other psychiatric conditions based of their clinic presentation. Our team of health care professionals consists of attending psychiatrists, ECT nursing staff, anesthesiologists, certified nurse anesthetists, and office support staff. ECT is conducted under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist and anesthesiologist, and we apply modern monitoring devices and anesthetic medications to provide safe and effective treatments.

We require outpatient ECT referrals to have a primary treating psychiatrist to be scheduled at ECT clinic for evaluation. Print and fill out the following three forms:

1. Physician referral sheet
2. New patient information packet
3. Patient information sheet

We will review the records and if appropriate will schedule an outpatient ECT clinic appointment
